A controversial movie about the future of Hong Kong has won the top prize at a local film awards. The Hong Kong Film Critics Association Awards gave the best-picture award to Ten Years, a series of vignettes that tap residents’ worst fears about Beijing’s grip on the semi-autonomous city. The movie, which was a box office hit locally, sparked protests by some in China who argued it was subversive and could prompt repression from Beijing.
Hong Kong’s scientists and researchers won a record number of prizes at the 49th International Exhibition of Inventions in Geneva this year. A total of seven gold medals, nine silver medals and one bronze were won by local researchers for their innovations, including a firm-to-soft intelligent floor mat for elderly fall prevention and a flexible circuit board that is able to transmit high-speed data. The winning technologies were developed by the Nano and Advanced Materials Institute under the Innovation and Technology Commission of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region government.

The Hong Kong International Convention of Asia Scholars (ICAS) is the largest academic conference in the field of global Hong Kong studies. It brings together renowned scholars from around the world to discuss issues on Hong Kong. In addition, the Society also organises the ICAS Hong Kong Studies Book Prize to recognise the best article on global Hong Kong studies.
The 25th Standard Chartered Hong Kong Marathon has set a new mark in the history of the event, with 217 local permanent residents crossing the finish line. They were supported by a special incentive award of up to HK$10,000 for men and HK$12,000 for women under the “Special Incentive Award for Marathon Challenge”. The prize was donated by an anonymous donor and the Foundation of the Hong Kong Academy of Medicine. The amount was matched under the Government Matching Scheme. The award was presented at a ceremony in the Palace Museum on Oct 17.
