Why Are There So Many Dy Pools on Sydney’s Beaches?

As Sydney residents and visitors, we’re lucky to have a number of beautiful ocean pools. But what is it about these special places that draws people to them? Curious Sydney questioner Krissy Varga wondered – how did the idea of building seawater pools become so popular on Sydney’s beaches, and why are there so many of them? We turned to pool expert Marie-Louise McDermott, and the Northern Beaches, Waverley and Randwick Council libraries for answers.

The answer to the first question is quite simple: the ocean pools are built on a surf coast, so waves can wash over their edges and create a unique swimming experience. They also provide a safe place for swimmers to swim, especially when the surf is rough. But the second reason is a bit more complex: it’s about forming community spaces in an urban environment where people can gather and socialise.

In the 1890s, the first ocean pools were built by local councils, private individuals and swim clubs. Some were small, like the rock pools carved out of the rocks at Dee Why on the northern beaches by surf club members in 1912. Others were larger, such as the Bronte Baths built by Waverley Council in the late 1800s. And some were even purpose-built, such as the Bondi Baths designed by architect and public health advocate Henry Alexander Wylie in 1913.

As the popularity of sdy pools grew, they became part of the social fabric of Sydney, and were used for training, exercise and recreation. They also provided a safe and clean environment for children to play in the water.

Some pools were designed for specific activities, such as lap swimming and leisure swimming. And others were designed for particular sports, such as diving and water polo. For example, the City of Sydney’s Olympic pool was designed with a ‘surge bubble’, which breaks the impact of a dive and helps prevent injuries by softening the impact of hitting the surface of the water.

Today, many of the sdy pools are still in use. But they have also evolved into tourist attractions, appearing on many lists of things to do and attracting thousands of visitors each year. Many have been refurbished, and some are open all year round. Others are only available during summer, when the temperatures are warmer and the seawater is clearer.
