SGPs measure student academic skills in terms of how much they have improved from one year to the next. The SGP is a percentile score that shows how far a student’s performance has progressed in comparison to their “academic peers.” Academic peers are students in the same grade who have similar MCAS test history and academic achievement levels, and may include all students statewide or within specific subgroups (e.g., race/ethnicity, special education, sheltered English immersion).

The SGP is an important part of the MCAS report card because it provides insight into what students have learned and how well they are mastering essential skills in each subject area. However, it should be considered in conjunction with scaled scores and achievement levels to gain a fuller picture of student performance.

For more information about interpreting SGPs, visit the MCAS Growth web page for more detailed descriptions of how the growth percentile is calculated and what it means to a student. Also, you can access a variety of stakeholder-specific guides that offer tips on using SGPs to inform decisions and continuous improvement processes.

In evaluating school-level SGP averages, it is important to keep in mind that percentile rankings are calculated anew each year. A student’s SGP in one year may be different than their SGP in another year, but differences of fewer than 10 points should not be viewed as statistically significant.

In addition, it is essential to consider how a student’s SGP in one subject area compares to that of their academic peers. If a student’s SGP in a particular subject area is higher than the median for their academic peer group, it may indicate that they are outperforming their peers. However, if a student’s SGP is lower than the median for their academic peer group, this could be an indication that they need to work harder to catch up.
