A sidney prize is a prestigious literary award that honors authors for their work. Typically, the award is given to authors of fiction or nonfiction who have demonstrated loyalty to high ideals. It has been awarded by a variety of organizations in the past, and currently is offered by the Sidney Hillman Foundation. The prize is a monetary reward, but it also honors authors’ dedication to their work.

The Sydney Taylor Book Awards were established in memory of the late Jewish playwright and publisher Sidney Taylor, who served on the board of the Playwrights’ Company. The award recognizes outstanding books written by children and young adults that promote tolerance and understanding of different cultures and religions. The winners are selected by a panel of judges. The winning book is deemed to be the best and most compelling in its category, and the author receives a cash prize. In addition, the winning book is recognized with a commemorative gold seal and an honorary trophy.
This prize is offered annually to students who have a commitment to the ideals of the Philip Sidney Ardern Memorial Fund, a charitable trust established in his name by Miss A.M. Ardern to honour the memory of her brother. The Prize is intended to stimulate the study of English literature and, in particular, Old and Middle English, but it is not confined to these areas.
It is designed to encourage deeper reflection and consideration by HLS students about their chosen profession and its role in society. Papers may address (but are not limited to) issues such as legal careers, the management of law firms and other legal institutions, diversity or gender-related matters, and the impact of globalization and other social trends upon lawyers and legal service providers.
The Irving Oberman Memorial Prize was created by bequest in 1973 to honor the memory of Professor Irving Oberman, A.B. 1917, and his wife, Isabel. It is awarded to the student who writes the most excellent paper analyzing a legal topic from an economic perspective. The papers are evaluated by a committee of HLS faculty members. Prior to submission, students must request that the professor under whom they wrote the paper email a statement of evaluation directly to Professor Steven Shavell by the stated deadline. The Prize is usually awarded in May. This year’s deadline is January 15.
