The 2023 Hong Kong Prize and BOCHK Science and Technology Innovation Prize

The Hong Kong Prize is an annual award to recognise students in the next-to-graduating class for their outstanding scholarship and their contributions in the community and other fields. It is managed by the Shaw Prize Foundation and carries a prize money of up to HK$1.2 million.

The 2023 HLMA ceremony was held on Tuesday night (December 19). The Honorable John KC Lee, Chief Executive of the HKSAR, delivered opening remarks via video conference. A number of renowned scholars and educators were also present to share their knowledge with the audience.

Besides the awards for academic achievement and research, the HLMA also offers opportunities for students to further develop their creativity by participating in various art activities. In addition to the Painting Competition, this year HKMoA introduced a Digital Graphics Category. The winner of this category will receive a shopping voucher and a trophy. The First Runner-up and Second Runner-up will be invited to join a special art activity organised by HKMoA, while their nominators will each receive a certificate of appreciation.

Apart from the HKMA prizes, students can also take part in the HK Global Development Prize organized by Generocity. This HK$5,000 contest invites innovators to propose ideas that can make a difference in the lives of people around the world and contribute to Hong Kong’s international development efforts.

The prestigious BOCHK Science and Technology Innovation Prize was awarded to five scholars from local universities on Monday. Laureates in the life and health, new materials and energy, fintech and advanced manufacturing received a total of HK$30 million (around $3.8 million).

Ng Siew Chien from the University of Hong Kong won the Life and Science Award for her development of noninvasive tests for gastrointestinal tract diseases and autism spectrum disorders. Her work is a major breakthrough in the treatment of these conditions. Meanwhile, Zhang Hua from HKUST won the New Materials and Energy Award for his research on phase engineering of nanomaterials and 3D micro- and nanofabrication. Besides these awards, War Child’s Mark Jordans and Luke Stannard won the Yidan Prize for Education Development.

The BOCHK Science and Technology Innovation Prize is an important milestone in the development of Hong Kong’s science and technology sector. It encourages scientific and technological innovation in the HKSAR and promotes the development of our economy and social fabric. It also helps raise the international profile of Hong Kong as a hub for science and technology innovation. This is the fifth time that the award has been given. It will continue to be supported by the HKSAR Government and its Principal Patron, the Swire Group.
