The Neilma Sidney Prize for Investigative Journalism

The prize honors and supports investigative journalism in service of the common good. The Foundation has honored contributors to the daily, periodical and labor press since 1950, in addition to photojournalists, writers and radio and television broadcasters. The Foundation seeks to illuminate the great issues of our time: from the search for a basis for lasting peace, to the need for better housing, medical care and employment security, to the promotion of civil liberties, democracy and the fight against discrimination on the basis of race or nationality, religion or sexual orientation.

The first place winner receives $5000 and two runners-up receive $750 each. The winning story will be published in the Summer 2023 edition of Overland, while the runners-up stories will be posted online. This year the judges were Laura Elvery, Paige Clark and Michael Winkler.

Overland is supported by the Malcolm Robertson Foundation. The Neilma Sidney Short Story Prize is open to all writers (located anywhere) who have not previously won a prize for their work and are not currently under consideration for another prize or publication. The judges are not allowed to read any other submissions for the duration of the competition. The judges and the Overland team would like to thank everyone who took part for their hard work and commitment to the integrity of this blind judging process.

In the fall and spring of each year a Chinese Jewish family celebrates not one but two new years. This warm and thoughtful picture book evokes the joy of the holidays through richly detailed illustrations that highlight the paper cutting traditions that are so important to both festivals.

In 2024, the Sydney Taylor Book Award Committee selected Richard Ho and Lynn Scurfield’s Two New Years for the award.
