Sound Healing: What, Why & How?

My journey to sound baths began in Santa Monica, California a few years ago. I’ve always had a monkey-mind, always thinking and my mind seems to never be at rest. I find traditional mediation difficult.
A friend recommended I experience a sound bath session at her local studio. I found the experience to be extremely beneficial to reach a state of mediation as I dropped in immediately when the instructor began playing the crystal singing bowls. The effects of the experience on my mind and my body were extraordinary. I felt calm, relaxed and I’d never slept better.
When I returned to Atlanta, I researched to see if there were sessions I could attend and I found an amazing sound healer who taught me about the practice. I learned that it is possible to use combinations of rhythms and frequencies, to shift our normal beta state (alert, concentrating, reacting) to an alpha (creative, relaxed), and even theta (meditative state) and delta (deep sleep; where restoring and healing can occur).
This is not a new practice. In fact, the practice of using singing bowls is something that has been done by the Tibetans for centuries. This deeply meditative practice has been linked to a reduction in stress and anxiety, a way to enhance body awareness and become more mindful. During a sound bath, you are actually ‘bathing’ in healing sounds that submerge your senses with a sonic frequency that can release you from the stresses of your everyday life. To move us from a place of imbalance back to the body’s natural state of balance.
Energetic Power of Sound Healing
The sound waves that are emitted during a session are meant to produce energy that is absorbed by participants. Each singing bowl is tuned to a specific note that corresponds with the energy centers of the body called Chakras, which are located on the midline of the body. There are seven main chakras: Root, Sacral, Solar Plexus, Heart, Throat, Third Eye and Crown. Each singing bowl is tuned to a specific note that is also associated with a specific Chakra. The intention when playing is to create harmony within the Chakras. The body will absorb the sound waves and begin to harmonize, allowing the body to activate its own healing process.
Research has Shown…
In a recent study published in the Journal of Anaesthesia, the use of relaxing music prior to a surgical procedure significantly reduced anxiety and stress for participants. Researchers used binaural beats, which is the combination of two sub-audible frequencies that target the right and the left hemispheres of the brain, creating a single frequency that the brain tunes into. This allows us to reach a deep state of meditation, leading to relaxation and calm. Many of my sound bath participants note that they feel the sounds going back and forth, from one side of their head to the other. The sound is moving to both hemispheres of the brain with the goal of creating balance within the mind and the body.
With this work, it’s my intention to help people reach a state of wellbeing, reduce their stress levels and hope they will continue to take some time for self-care. Hopefully, creating balance of between mind, body and spirit.
